These no-heel styles range from demure pale-pink numbers from MARC by Marc Jacobs to Prada’s torpedolike silver metallic version, with black grosgrain ribbon–as easily paired with denim as elegant evening wear.
Though flats have been around for a couple of seasons, this year they are everywhere. And they’ve taken on a more playful attitude–mesh textures or ribbon lace-ups–to counterbalance the dominatrix-style sexiness proposed by many designers this season, says Gabriella Cherubini, senior fashion editor at Grazia magazine in Milan.
Though flats offer a welcome respite from high heels, don’t get too comfortable: the pointier versions are the nicest. A tapered toe will generally flatter, while exaggeratedly rounded ones can give a petite woman a “cutoff” look, or make larger feet resemble swimming flippers. Audrey Hepburn would be proud.
