“We looked at a number of options and, in the end, we both thought it was in the best interest of our student-athletes and football programs to play out the remainder of our respective schedules as they stand,” UF athletics director Jeremy Foley said in a statement, per CollegeFootballTalk.com.

Both teams had open dates Oct. 25.

“It was not in our best interest to play 10 consecutive weeks without a bye week.  We look forward to our return to Florida in 2017,” Idaho AD Rob Spear said in a statement on the Idaho website.

Heavy lightning and torrential rains delayed the start of the game, scheduled for 7 p.m. Finally, after nearly three hours, Idaho kicked off to the Gators at 9:50. Valdez Showers returned the kick 68 yards to the Idaho 14, but before Florida get line up and run its first play, the lightning returned.

And the decision was made to end the game, which was later deemed a no-contest.

The Vandals still will get their contracted $975,000 for making the trip to Gainesville this year.

Florida, meanwhile, will refund millions in ticket sales, although insurance is expected to cover all or most of the lost revenue.
