Willie Daniel Littlefield, 55, called 911 to say there were explosives in a car in the parking lot of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Thonotosassa, Florida, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the church, which is located along the 301 Highway, along with a bomb squad after the threat was reported.

Littlefield made the call at around 1.30 p.m. on Sunday and claimed to have planted an explosive device in the back of a car that was parked in the church’s lot.

The 911 call reporting the threat was traced back to a cell phone registered in Littlefield’s name, WTSP reported. Deputies arrived at his home at the same time as deputies and the bomb squad responded to the church, according to the station.

A parked car containing several closed cardboard boxes was located in the parking lot of the church. According to WTSP, deputies immediately started to evacuate people inside the church before establishing a perimeter around the car.

But the bomb squad did not locate any bombs or explosive devices in the vehicle. The cardboard boxes actually contained car parts, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said Littlefield, who is unemployed, admitted to calling 911 to make the false bomb threat. He was arrested without incident at an address on Ripley Road at around 2 p.m. on Sunday, according to the arrest report by the sheriff’s office. The address is around a 10-minute drive from the Fellowship Baptist Church.

“He called 911 to say there were explosives in the back of a car in the church parking lot. #teamhcso responded right away with all our resources, including the bomb squad,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. “They found car parts in the boxes.”

In the post, the sheriff’s office said false threats were “not a joke” and warned prank callers to be aware of the consequences of reporting falsehoods.

“This should be a reminder that no one will be laughing if you call in a false bomb threat. We WILL take you to jail,” the post said.

Littlefield, of Thonotosassa, has been charged with misuse of 911 system and false report concerning planting a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction, online records show. He is being held on an $8,000 bond.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active.
